Wow… It’s 2010 folks… 2010!

2009ย  just flew away… And didn’t even look back.I, for one, would like to thank the thousands of you that read this blog on a daily basis, believe me, I never thought I was writing anything that interesting. Well at least not to anyone but me… ๐Ÿ˜€ But I can’t say it hasn’t been rewarding. And to my regulars, I say Domo Arigatou Gozaimasu. Thank you very much! I will do my level best to continue to keep you all entertained in 2010!

And 2010 looks like it will be an auspicious year. It’s a nice round number, for one thing. And It has a movie named after it… though somehow I doubt the events in the movie will actually occur in real life… ๐Ÿ˜€ But either way, I think this is going to be an amazing year… I can just feel it in my smoldering bones. I’ve got some interesting projects planned, and I think you will all like them.

This will be the year of really, really, cool stuff. And I leave you with one such piece of cool to contemplate:

Best wishes for the new year, from me, your perpetually fiery host, from the Realm of the Dark Blade! ๐Ÿ˜€

Sword Wars III: The Clone Swords…

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

If you have been following this blog for any length of time you might recall a couple of posts I made last year about a couple of swords with a rather uncanny resemblance. Namely the Punisher, Batman, and Spider-man swords. I recently just happened to run into a very, very familiar sword:

Skull Sword of the Tomb Chaser

Whoa. Can you say “Punisher Sword”? I can. Easily. It just rolls, effortlessly, off my tongue… “Punisher sword”… OK. I’ll stop now. the point is, this sword is almost identical to the one I posted about before that was called the “Punisher Sword“. I’m not even going to repeat my rant about the similarities between the Punisher sword, the Batman sword and the spider man sword, as you can read all about that in my previous post here.

But this case is probably the most heinous, because precious little was done to differentiate this from the punisher sword. That is not to say that they are identical. Because they are not. They are “almost” identical. There is a single subtle difference between this sword and the Punisher sword. Here, I’ll put them side by side and let you see if you can spot the difference:

The Punisher Sword.<<__>>The Skull Sword.

Did you see it? Come on! Look closer. OK, I’ll give you a hint. Butt. ๐Ÿ™‚ No? How about this, Pommel color. Aaahh… Yes, I see a glimmer of recognition. Yes, the little skull pommel of the Skull sword is different, it is not chrome, but rather either a copper or an aged skull eggshell brown enamel type color.

No, not a big difference by any means, but it still indicates that the weapons designer was trying to differentiate this sword from the Punisher sword. But rather than take any meaningful steps to create a new sword, they basically decided “Hey, I’ve got a great idea! Lets paint the pommel, and change the name! Nobody will ever know!!” Apparently their idea of variety/originality constitutes recoloring the pommel on two otherwise identical swords. Why bother?

And what kind of a name is “Skull Sword of the Tomb Chaser”? A zombie killing reference? Some kind of play on Tomb Raider? Lara Croft wouldn’t be caught dead with this sword. For that matter, Frank Castle (the Punisher) wouldn’t have used a sword either. In fact, if they were both to die and come back as zombies, they still wouldn’t be caught undead with this sword. And most certainly not with a name like that. Hey marketing! How about you do some actual freakin’ research eh?! Idiots.

Now at this point you probably already know how I feel about sword designers who take stupid shortcuts in order to squeeze every last red penny from a given sword, rather than actually doing work and designing a new sword that might actually interest people. So I’m not going to go into another full blown rant about it. I just have one word for them.

The Skull Sword of the Tomb Chaser – [True Swords]

And three is a charm…

If you read my last post, you’ll remember my pointing out how there seems to be one specific sword designer who has focused on making movie themed swords for movies that had nothing to do with swords. In fact they seem to be focused on movies whose lead characters are distinctly not into swords. My previous post compared both the Punisher and the Batman sword.

But you’ll never guess who the latest comic book hero/victim is. Take a wild guess. Give up? Wuss. It’s your friendly neighborhood Spiderman, that’s who! And for good ole’ Spidey, we actually have TWO (count ’em, 2) weapons to add to this impromptu collection of movie swords that never were. Allow me to present:

Spidermans War Sword and the Spiders Fury Dagger:

Interestingly, Spidey gets a dagger too. Though I doubt that this was made by the same people who made the swords. But to refresh your memory, below are all three movie swords, side by side:

First, (As the Joker liked to call him) the “Bats” Sword, followed by the Punishers Sword. And last, but certainly not least, we have Spidermans War Sword. And now you can see exactly how similar they are. In fact they might as well be brothers. At least these folks are efficient. Take the same blade, slap on a new hilt, and Voila, a new movie sword. In the case of the Punisher/Batman swords, they didn’t even bother to change the grip.

And the most amazing about all of this is that none of these characters actually use swords. Nada. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Not a one. The Punisher is a bona fide gun nut. Batman is all about the technology. And Spidey, well he relies on his trusty web slinging ability above all else. What tickles me the most is the fact that the one character who is least likely to ever pick up a weapon in his life, namely Spidey, actually gets both a sword AND a dagger. What a wonderful, amazing world we live in.

But all that being said, they did some nice things to the Spiderman sword. I like how they incorporated the Green goblin motif in the design. I always did like the aesthetics of the Green Goblins toys. And it works great for the guard design. In fact, if these guys ever made a Green Goblin sword I’d totally buy that. Interesting how the crazy ones always have the coolest ideas…

Punisher Movie Sword?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

In keeping with the action movie themed swords I have talked about recently, I thought I’d post about an interesting sword, namely “The Punisher” movie sword:

The Punisher Sword

The Punisher Sword

This sword is all the more interesting because, well, frankly I don’t remember the Punisher using any kind of sword in the movie at all, let alone a “Punisher” branded weapon. Now it could be my memory is faulty, but a more likely explanation is that the manufacturer is simply trying to make some moolah off the Punisher movie… Gotta love marketing…

But besides the fact that this sword may have nothing whatsoever to do with the movie, (beyond the skull motif), it really is a nice sword. I like the direction the designer went with it. The way the punisher skull emblem has been incorporated into the aesthetics of the sword is very pleasing. The blade itself appears quite menacing. Though I have a preference for curved weapons, I also love well designed straight, simple and narrow swords. I love the symmetry of them.

I think the greatest thing about this sword is how the skull motif has been fluidly incorporated into it’s design, being prominent but not overpowering. The skull on the pommel is a nice touch. The cross guard is perhaps the most noteworthy feature of this sword, incorporating a really sweet skull just below the ricasso, set amid what I can only describe as a kind if hybrid wing/claw cross guard design, also sprinkled with skulls, with a large bone-like separator mid-wing.

The numerous skulls on the wings of the cross guard are probably the only area where I think they went a little overboard. I would have preferred to see it empty, or with some form of organic emphasis on the curve of the guard. But beyond that everything else is well done, down to the smooth, almost concave taper of the ridged black grip.

Overall, a superb design. Even if no such weapon is canon in the “Punisher” universe…
