Another Wonderfully Impractical Anime Humongoblade!

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I was just looking through my archive wondering what to post about next, when I ran into a prop/replica of another great anime sword I’ve always found rather cool looking, if not really, really, over the top, like Clouds massive cleaver from Final Fantasy (aka Buster), or Ichigos over sized kitchen knife from Bleach (his zanpakutō Tensa Zangetsu) , or Inuyashas rather impressive doggie tooth (Tetsusaiga), or…

Well you get my point. The list of over sized anime swords is endless. You almost get the impression they are overcompensating for… Err… something. Or not. OK never mind.

Anyway, today I found another interesting example of over-the-top black smithing. This time from the anime Beserk:

Gattsus (aka Guts) Dragon Slayer

Gattsus (aka Guts) Dragon Slayer

Ain’t it a beaut? Now I do not remember where this pic came from, it’s been in my gallery for a while, and I thought I had even blogged about it before, but apparently not.

Basically, this thing, in the anime Beserk, is a good 6 foot or so slab of wide, massive steel with really, really sharp edges, wielded by this crazy black knight called Guts. Or Gattsu, if you want to use the Japanese pronunciation. Bad ass guy, big ass sword. And, of course,  completely and totally unusable by anyone but a fictional hero, a genetically enhanced human, or a cyborg. Or something along those lines.

And before you say “Pfft… I can wield that mate!” Let me remind you that the ability to swing a sword around is not the same as wielding a sword. This sword, like so many other anime weapons, would, in real life, wield you, not the other way around. I kid you not. Probably pop your arms out of their sockets too.

But It is still a very mean, and no nonsense looking sword. Just love it and had to share. What can I say. I have this thing for large pieces of dark, sharpened, pointy steel. Especially those with this kind of presence… 🙂

The Longest Sword Evar?

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Now we’ve talked about massive swords, combat worthy swords, transformer swords, even ghost busting swords. Now we get to talk about the longest freakin’ sword in the history of swords. at least in the history of fictitious swords. Until they began manufacturing them. At which point they became real swords. Based on a fictitious sword, from the (you guessed it!) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie. which means that it doesn’t count. Which doesn’t matter because it’s still not “Da longenesest sword evah.” Confused yet? Good. Cause I’m messin’ wit you.

To my knowledge, the longest real sword ever made, at almost 76in overall, is the Japanese Ôdachi called the Kashiwa Tachi. AKA The Yamagane Tsukuri Kokushitsu Hirumaki Ôdachi. AKA “Da Longenest Japanese Sword in da Werlds. Evar.” Ok so it’s really not called that. But it should be:

Kashiwa Tachi

Kashiwa Tachi

Yep. Now that’s a sword. And, fittingly, it’s name is equally long. What is it with the long names for long swords? I don’t get it. Anyway, a sword like this would probably be useless for anything but ceremony or decorating a wall, but there it is.

But that isn’t why we are here today. Were here to see a fictitious sword brought to life. Even though with real swords like the Kashiwa Tachi Ôdachi in existence, it’s almost a let down. Almost.

Welcome to the almost interminable expanse of steel that is

Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi

Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi

Now this sword is not as large as the Kashiwa Tachi, but at 68in long, with a 50in blade, it’s no slouch either. This will definitely reach out and touch someone. And not in a nice way either.

You could probably cut down a small tree with this. With a single cut. If you could actually wield it. Not likely for mere mortals such as you and I…

Wait, what?

I sometimes forget. I’m not really mere mortal now am I. Sheesh. I’ve been hanging out with you folks waaay too long…

The Ultimate Gunblade…

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

OK, I know I just blogged about the wonders of the gunblade, but I still have another one to show you. Now this blade is also a prop from the Final Fantasy franchise, but, in my humble opinion, I think this is *Teh Pwnerer* of all gun blades right here. Yep. The Ultimate Gun Blade. What? Never heard of “Teh Pwnerer” before? *snort* Yeah, I’m a bad, bad, man… That’s right, don’t mess wit’ me or imma have to break out my GUNBLADE up in this mug…

Ya skeerd? Not buying it huh? Oh well. It was worth a try… I’ll bet you’d be skeerd if it you happened to meet Seifer Almasy in a dark ally… ‘Cause this here is his gunblade. I present:

The Hyperion Gunblade

The Hyperion Gunblade

Now at this juncture, I suppose you’ll be wanting me to actually qualify the opined ultimacy of this here gunblade. I would be extremely happy to oblige.

First, the hyperion blade is, imho, a much cooler design than Squall’s Gunblade. In contrast to the curved lines of Squalls gunblade, The Hyperion Gunblades transitional areas all seem to terminate in corners or wicked points. This gives it a much more sinister appearance. If you have been reading my blogs for any amount of time, you should have figured out that this is a great big plus in my book.

The Hyperion Gunblade - An Evil Gunblade

The Hyperion Gunblade - An Evil Gunblade

Now if that wasn’t enough, take a look at the type of firearm the blade is attached to. A pistol! Yes, ladies and germs, the Hyperion Gunblade is a giant sword with an automatic pistol attached, as opposed to Squalls gunblade, which is attached to a revolver. Now I have mentioned before that I am a fan of weapons in general, and firearms are no exception, so allow me to provide a little insight as to why I feel that a pistol-based Gunblade is a superior combat weapon. It is true that, from at least a zen perspective, a revolver might appear to be better, since they do not rely on large magazine springs or highly complex mechanisms, are simpler, more robustly designed and therefore generally more reliable.

HOWEVER, a pistol can generally carry more ammo than a revolver, (usually 50%-100+% more), can be designed for full automatic fire, and can be lighter and smaller than a revolver for any given caliber. I think these qualities outweigh the potential pitfalls, and make it a shoe-in for total combat dominance. Hence the “Ultimate” title. What? Don’t believe me? Look it up, buster. Don’t make me bust a cap in yo… Oww… that really hurt! Sheesh! No pinching!

Amazing Transforming Busters!

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

It wasn’t too long ago that I blogged about Cloud Strife of the Final Fantasy world and his huge Buster Sword. I happened to know that an animated movie had been made about the series, called Final Fantasy VII: Advents Children. But what I was not aware of, was that “improvements” that had been made to Clouds Buster for this installment. I was rather speechless at what I found. Here, for your viewing pleasure is the new and improved Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII: Advents Children…

Clouds Combined Sword

Clouds Combined Sword

Now this sword is a doozy. This buster is significantly larger than the original already ginormous Buster, at 44in long, 7in wide and 1.5in thick. But not only is is larger than the original buster, in every dimension, but is actually 4 swords in one! This sword (or combination thereof) is a good 15 lbs of Cloud Busting steel! Talk about overkill!

Now I’m sure that with the kind of strength that the main characters of the final fantasy universe possess, swords like these would still be practical to wield in battle, however it does beg the question: Under what circumstances would having 4 regular sized swords be better than having one devastatingly large one, especially if you have only two arms to wield them with? Things that make you go “Hmmm…”

Combined Sword - Hilt View

Regardless, the idea behind this weapon and the way it was put together is very original, and looking at the various individual swords and the amazing fit and finish, at least based on the graphics provided, is dynamic weapon art at its best. You can even see the attention to detail in the design and implementation of the built in guards on the two folding swords. A very unique and interesting piece. I totally want one…

The Amazing Gun Blade

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

It’s a Gun! Its a Sword! No, Its the Gun Blade! Today we get the opportunity to look at another unique entry in the humongousword saga, with a twist. This is Squall Leonheart’s Gun Blade Sword From Final Fantasy VIII

Squall Leonheart's Gun Blade

Squall Leonheart's Gun Blade

Now here we are presented with a unique combination. I have in fact seen a similar, more realistically scaled combination before, however this one is definitely more commanding. It is essentially another large sword, 30″ to be exact, but this time attached to a revolver, which acts as both the gun stock and the sword grip.

Or is it a large caliber revolver with an over sized, permanently fixed bayonet? Either way, it isn’t exactly a conventional bladed weapon, but then few of the weapons I post about will be particularly standard.

Kinda puts a whole new spin on the old phrase about bringing a knife to a gunfight…
