A Funky Double Bladed Fighting… Weapon?

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Today we have yet another entrant into the “Black Ronin” series of blades.

Black Ronin Dual Fighter

Now this weapon I find interesting because… I don’t get it. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot to like about the weapon. The matte black finish, the dual, westernized tanto style blades, these are all very cool.

But usually weapons that make significant departures from the standard design usually do so for a reason. For most weapons, I can figure it out just by looking at them and thinking about how those changes make them different and how it would affect it during it’s use. But this one… I got nothing.

Obviously, from the name, this is intended to be a fighting blade of some type. But the way it’s designed, it kinda seems like it would work against you in certain circumstances. The upward pointing blade, well, ok, I can see that offset working to improve your reach and protecting your valuable digits. Maybe.

But the downward one… I dunno. And now that I think about it, this design would also make the chances of grip rotation in the hand more likely. In other words, since the blade is offset from the handle, if it’s hit from the side with sufficient force, it will want to make the whole thing rotate around in your hand. Kind of like a really old fashioned hand drill. Possibly ending up facing you…

LOL OK, I’m exaggerating, but it does really look like an old fashioned hand drill… Maybe that’s why marketing had to resort to the tried and true “Black Ronin” treatment. Perhaps this weapon designer missed their true calling…

And Now… A Sword For Double Agents…

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

I think I may have mentioned before the insanity of naming a large piece of black steel anything with the words “secret” and “agent”. Notwithstanding my prior expose on the matter in a previous post, I ran across yet another “agent” sword. Now this one only uses the name agent but is still almost as bad, name wise, as “secret agent” since the secrecy (and hence stealth) is still implied. What is not explained to us as potential “Agents” is how any agent, double or otherwise, would be able to maintain their secrecy with this strapped to their back.

Now I will readily admit that in spite of the constant marketing misnomers, there are some very interesting concepts out there, and this is one of them. A double bladed sword, with the blades on either end, as opposed to either side. This is in fact not a bad design, I can see how you could use this in one hand. You could choke up on the handle for reverse blade action or hold it further down to emphasize a hatchet grip style attack. Very cool.

Now I’d really like to see a double blade design where the blades are also facing opposite sides of the sword in addition to being on opposite ends, but I get the feeling it won’t happen unless I make one myself. In any case, this sword is a cool idea overall, and presents some interesting martial arts possibilities.

Endorsed by Secret Agents everywhere…

Today we are going to be taking a look at another interesting sword. Interesting both because of what it was called on the site I found it on, and also because of it’s overall design. I give you:

Secret Agent Sword

Secret Agent Sword

OK, I will admit that this is a very cool looking sword. Just look at it. It has everything a secret agent might need. It is has a stealthy black finish, two different edge types, a serrated edge for sawing action, and a straight edge for cutting soft targets, it’s got a wickedly sharp point, and a saw tooth section on the spine for who knows what. It has a slot in the cord wrapped handle for a lanyard, and it’s even got futuristic cut outs in the middle. It certainly looks the part of a secret agents weapon. I’d buy one.

Only one problem. No disrespect to any secret agent who also happens to be a ninja, but if you are a secret agent who would carry something like this around, you are probably not playing with a full deck. What kind of secret agent would be able to keep their cover while lugging this monstrosity around? A cosplay convention spy? I don’t think they’d even let you in with it! An assassin or hit man, maybe, but I’m sure even they would prefer a rifle from a distance or a hand gun at close range over this. But for a secret agent, carrying this thing around would be kind of an anathema to the whole secrecy thing don’tcha think?

Nonetheless, silly marketing high induced naming aside, this sword certainly looks like it means business, and I’d certainly not hesitate to make space for it on my wall…
