Another Dark Sword…
If you recall, a several posts ago, I blogged about a dark sword, from Kit Rae canon, which seemed to have too much going on in it’s life for it’s own good. Well, today I ran into one of it’s cousins.
Now as you can see, it bears some of the trademarks of the stereotypical drama laden Kit Rae sword, (much like the last one) However the questionable family trait of being unbearably busy is actually quite muted in this particular relative. The design is a little more grounded, a little less flighty, and much more focused. You can actually see
Now the blade profiles on Kit Rae swords are generally quite the lookers, if a little narcissistic and this one is no exception. I find this one exceptionally notable in it’s simplicity. There is a beautiful combination of straight lines and subtle curves on this flat black blade. But as usual, the hilt is where all the action is.
This time around, there is actually a discernable theme! An i’m calling it the Demon Talons.
The pommel is made in the image of a rather irate looking horned demon, which sits atop a simple high gloss black grip with a mild swell in the middle. The grip runs into the unique guard, what I will call the “talons” of the demon.
The guard is basically a set of cool horned claws. Or clawed talons. Or taloned claws if you so desire. Your choice.
the point is, there are a set of what look like golden wing claws, atop the downward pointing black talons of the guard, at either side of the blade. I really like the overall combination if gold talons and black.
Now in all honesty, I still think the guard does indulge in what I would consider superfluous detail. I mean, I can understand the horn motif at the intersection of the guard and the blade, but I fail to understand why there should be some kind of serpent like creatures writhing around in the talons of the guard…
But to be fair these details are not overly distracting, and in the end I kinda like the swords overall demeanor. Yes, it could be simpler, but hey, life is never simple now is it…

A stunning sword to be sure, but I have to say, that guard kind of scares me, the small spaces between blade and guard and the curved outer edges of the guard make my wrist nervous when it comes to another blade sliding down the sword. But that could just be my inexperience in sword fighting speaking.
Good point. With this particular guard design the small space might make it rather difficult to trap a blade, depending on how the guard was presented. A slightly elevated incoming blade could possibly slide down around the side of talon, and over the guard. But then again, if you’ve put yourself in a position where your opponents sword can slide undeflected, down your blade towards you, in all likelihood, “ur doin’ it rong” to begin with…
But in either case, I doubt Kit Rae was thinking about actual combat when he designed this particular piece. LOL…
I have to admit, that is a pretty sweet looking sword.
It is indeed a wicked looking blade isn’t it…
A bit busy, but a beautiful deasign.
I like his designs, but for my taste they could be toned down just slightly.
Still, great stuff.
Indeed, If he could drop all of the “extraneous” detail from his blade work, I would consider most of his designs the bomb diggity…
Haha… actually, traps with this would be fun. It could almost be used as a swordbreaker, if your opponent happened to be using a crummy mass-produced thing. As the blade gets into the |_| area (between blade and talon/claw/taloned claw) you twist your wrist. A very difficult move to pull of, that is for sure.But, if you do it just right, you can snap the blade (if it’s a PoS) or flick it out of his grip.
Of course, you have to be really good, or the blade flicks straight into you. And that’s not desirable.
Yeah, that might be cool… If this weren’t only marginally better than a crummy mass produced blade itself… It looks good, but it’s not really a battle ready blade… so there will be no blade snapping, sword flicking action. Y’hear?

Hmmm just an random thought, but I have a similar sword, and its nearly impossible to fight with that thing, because of guess what? yap, the guard, or what u call the “Talons”. The first strike with taht sword gives u a feeling, as if a demon rips off the skin from ur bones, not useful, and not comfortable -.- the only thing, this weapon could be usefull, is confusing ur enemy by hurting urself …
@Ernesto/Niccolo
Actually Spawn and Witchblade are also some of my favorite comic book characters. I have not read The Darkness, but i heard very good things about it.
@Seraph
Indeed, this is the only problem with weapons which have point bits pointing back towards the user… But this is also why I said it is not recommended that this sword be used for any kind of vigorous swashbuckling fun…
Yeah, great looking sword, nice styling and detailed throughout, we have a similar one on our website.
