Today I ran across a cool sword from the movie “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”:

Sword of the Headless Horseman

This sword was the preferred weapon of the headless Hessian warrior known by those in the little, witchcraft beset village of Sleepy Hollow as “The Headless Horseman”. In the movie, The Hessian sometimes used this sword in conjunction with a small axe, however for majority of the movie, this sword reigned unchallenged.

While real life Hessian calvary would probably have used long, slightly curving sabers, this movie was not intended to be historically accurate, so I suppose we’ll have to let that slide. Especially since they replaced the boring old calvary saber with something much, much cooler. A very wicked little sword.

The blade is long, straight and narrow with a mild taper from hilt to tip. It sports a fuller that runs from just above the ricasso to about a quarter of the blade way from the tip. Overall, this is one of my favorite blade form factors.

And the hilt does not disappoint either. The ricasso is punctuated by two semicircular voids, one on either side, and then runs down into a unique and slightly curving talon-like cross guard. The guard sits atop a smoothly tapering grip sporting a snake like scale pattern. Very cool. Some form of reptile, with it’s jaws agape, and it’s fangs exposed, serves duty as the pommel of this intimidating weapon.

Although I initially assumed that the head on the pommel was a snake, upon more detailed inspection, I realized I was wrong. The jaw is much closer in structure to a crocodiles than a snakes. Except that crocodiles have waaay more teeth, and do not have fangs like this. My best guess is that it is intended to represent the German lindwurm or dragon. Whatever it is, the whole theme, with the scales, the fangs, etc makes for a very sweet and sinister weapon.

Absolutely my kind of weapon. I have to say, for a Hessian with no head, who lives in the dirt underneath an old gnarley tree, he’s got excellent taste in swords…
